How to Generate Etsy Tags

Tags help Etsy match listings with shoppers’ searches. Enlistra Tag Generation can help you brainstorm candidate phrases from a product description and keyword research. Always review generated suggestions for relevance before adding them to a listing.

1. Start with an accurate product brief

Write a short description that covers what the item is, who it is for, how it is used, its style or materials, and the occasion if relevant. Be specific about what is included. A tag tool can only produce useful candidates when the input describes the real product clearly.

2. Generate candidates with Enlistra

  1. Open the Tag Generation tool in your Enlistra account.
  2. Enter the product brief and any promising phrases from Keyword Research.
  3. Generate a set of candidate tags if available.
  4. Remove irrelevant, misleading, duplicated, or overly broad phrases.
  5. Check length limits and relevance in Etsy’s own listing interface before saving.

3. Make tags diverse and relevant

Etsy currently allows up to 13 tags per listing. Tags may be short phrases, and Etsy recommends using accurate, relevant words and a diverse range of terms. See the current Etsy tag guidance to confirm requirements. Consider product type, audience, purpose, style, occasion, recipient, and use case—but only when each genuinely fits.

4. Avoid common tag mistakes

  • Using popular phrases that do not describe the item.
  • Using spelling variants or near-duplicates for most of the available tag slots.
  • Repeating the exact same broad idea without adding a useful distinction.
  • Adding competitor names or protected brand terms without a legitimate basis.
  • Assuming a generated list is automatically optimized or guaranteed to rank.

5. Check tags against the live market

Search a candidate phrase on Etsy and review whether the results match the product you sell. Use Enlistra Keyword Research to compare alternative phrases, but rely on the displayed definitions and data coverage when interpreting metrics. Revisit tags when a product changes or credible new data suggests an opportunity.

Tag checklist

  • Every tag accurately describes the product.
  • Phrases reflect several relevant buyer intents.
  • No available tag slot is wasted on an unrelated trend.
  • The title, category, attributes, and description tell a consistent story.
  • The final tags meet Etsy’s current interface limits.
