Opening an Etsy shop involves more than choosing a name. You must use an eligible seller location, provide accurate account information, complete the onboarding steps shown to you, and prepare your first listings. Etsy changes its setup flow from time to time, so use this guide alongside the official How to Open an Etsy Shop instructions.
Before you begin
- An Etsy account and access to the email address associated with it.
- A shop name that follows Etsy’s naming rules.
- Your real country and seller details.
- Payment, billing, identity, and tax information requested for your location.
- A product that complies with Etsy’s current Seller Policy and Creativity Standards.
Step 1: Start on Etsy’s selling page
Use a desktop web browser and visit Etsy.com/sell. Sign in or create an Etsy account, then choose the option to get started. Answer the onboarding questions honestly. Follow the current interface; button names and verification steps may change.
Step 2: Set your shop preferences
Choose the shop language, country, and currency carefully. Etsy says your primary shop language is the default language for your listings and cannot simply be changed later, although additional language translations may be available. Choose a language you can use confidently to describe products and communicate with buyers.
Select the country where you actually operate. Do not select a different country to bypass eligibility, payment, or verification rules. Choose a listing currency after considering your target buyers and possible conversion costs.
Step 3: Choose a shop name
Choose a name that is memorable, easy to spell, and relevant to your brand. Etsy’s guidance states that shop names must meet its length and character requirements, be available, and not infringe another member’s trademark. Check availability in the live setup flow. Before committing to a name, search the web and relevant trademark databases for confusingly similar brands.
Step 4: Create or prepare your first listing
Etsy may ask you to create a listing during onboarding. Prepare accurate photos or mockups, a specific title, a complete description, the right category and attributes, pricing, inventory or digital files, and shipping information if the item is physical. Do not publish a listing until you can fulfil the promises it makes.
Step 5: Set up payments and billing
Follow the payment setup process offered for your seller country. Etsy may request bank or payment-provider details, identity verification, a billing card, tax information, or other documentation. Use accurate legal details and make sure names and account information match the requirements shown to you.
Important notes for sellers in India
Etsy’s current India-specific help article says new shops in India can sell internationally only, require a valid and regular GSTIN, and must use a Payoneer Payment Account for Etsy Payments. It also lists a one-time USD 10 set-up fee and a payment-processing fee of 5% + ₹25. These requirements and fees are subject to change; verify them directly in Etsy’s India seller payments guide and your own onboarding screen. This information is not tax or legal advice.
Step 6: Complete shop details
Add the information Etsy asks for, such as your shop icon, banner, About section, policies, delivery settings, and profile details. Be transparent about who makes the products and how they are produced. If you work with a production partner, disclose that relationship where required.
Step 7: Review and open the shop
Review all details before finishing onboarding. Check spelling, product images, prices, digital file delivery or shipping settings, processing times, and buyer-facing policies. Complete any required verification steps. Keep an eye on Shop Manager and Etsy messages for follow-up requests.
After opening
- Check that listings are visible and accurate.
- Review your Payment account for fees and deposits.
- Respond promptly and professionally to buyer messages.
- Track views, visits, favourites, orders, and conversion trends without assuming any one metric guarantees future sales.
- Improve listings using real customer questions and observed performance.
Troubleshooting
If you cannot open a shop, check seller-country eligibility, payment setup, identity verification, and any notices in your account. Do not repeatedly create new accounts to get around an onboarding restriction. Contact Etsy Support through official channels if the issue persists.
